Portrait Photography Tips

Are you getting ready for a portrait photography session? Here are some tips to ensure the best results.

Whether you are taking a family portrait for a special gift or you want to update your photo to include new family members, formal pictures of all the relatives together are treasured possessions for most people. However, nothing can ruin a group shot quicker than lack of colour coordination. Having Uncle John show up in his quicksilver board-shorts, new Bintang T-shirt, red thongs, and his favourite white Bali surf hat while the rest of the family is decked out in khaki pants and mocha sweaters will not make for the perfect family portrait.

When attempting to get a perfect group shot, utilizing similar coloured clothing can be extremely advantageous. Having everyone dress in garments with a consistent colour palette will create an aesthetically pleasing visual effect.

Family reunions are a perfect way to commemorate memories that will last a lifetime.

12 TIPS When it comes to family photos, there are a few key items to consider when choosing what to wear.

  • Wear solid coloured clothing

  • Choose muted tones that are a bit subdued

  • Avoid all white or all black clothing

  • Choose similar tones for your top and bottom (both dark or both light)

  • Choose 1-3 colours for your group portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together and have everyone work within that colour palette. For example: dark green, navy, and burgundy – all dark jewel tones. OR tan, a lighter olive green, and denims – all lighter, softer tones. Coordinate, don't match.

  • Choose a top with sleeves at least to the elbow

  • Choose long pants for men/ladies or a skirt below the knee for ladies

  • Choose dark socks and footwear (unless it’s a barefoot photo on the beach)

  • Keep jewellery simple and minimalistic

  • Do your hair the way you’d normally do it while wearing these clothes (I’ll explain more later)

  • If getting a haircut or new hairdo, make your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to your portrait session

  • Bring some accessories. If your kids have a "best friend" teddy bear, we don't want to miss him!
